Officially listed as Mission Indians, the Native American of Southern California were from various tribes, Christianized at the Missions. The Padres at this Mission called them Diegueños. In coastal areas families made their homes of tule, inland they were made of brush or branches. The native people came to the Missions seeking food and education and once converted to Christianity, were considered neophytes.
