The decision was made in 1729 to remove the presidio, Nuestra Seńora de los Dolores de los Tejas, which had been providing protection to the Missions in East Texas. The Spanish government wanted to cut expenses and felt that the local people were peaceful. The missionaries of the Franciscan college of Querétero were unsuccessful in opposing the action and in July 1730 moved their three Missions (La Purísima Concepción, San Francisco de los Neches and San José de los Nazonis) to Austin, near Barton Springs along the Colorado River. Near Douglass, Texas. |
