The Mission was founded as a result of the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 in New Mexico when the Tigua tribe fled, some west and some south. The church was dedicatyed October 1682. The pueblo of Ysleta del Sur, the spelling of Ysleta with a "Y" and the term del Sur (south) was done to differentiate the new settlement from the mother pueblo, Isleta (link to NM mission) The Mission is recognized as the oldest continuously operated parish in the State of Texas. There are claims that the Mission has the oldest continuously cultivated plot of land in the United States The Mission moved several times due to flooding and following a flood in 1829, the Rio Grande changed its course placing the Mision in the Republic of Texas. The church was remodeled in 1897 and a fire damaged the church in 1907. |
